Living with Less is a Good Thing

Everett family is learning to live well with less
By Sarah Jackson, Herald Writer

When Jim and Dana Strickland's investments in the Everett real estate market tanked last year, it was time for a reality check.

They ended up in debt, which distracted them from their focus on family, community and simplicity.

"Going into debt, perpetually, is just the American way to do things," said 46-year-old Jim Strickland, who works as a special education teacher in Marysville. "That frustrates me.

Local Businesses Win Governor's Commute Smart Awards

Community Transit partners with 76 businesses on commute trip reduction Snohomish County, WA.

Working with Community Transit to help set up employee transportation programs has paid off for five local companies. Four Bothell companies - Amgen, Philips Healthcare, Fiserv Health and the University of Washington Bothell campus - as well as Lynnwood’s Bingo King were honored with a 2008 Governor’s Commute Smart Award.

The companies were recognized for helping their employees find alternate ways of getting to work and helping ease traffic congestion in the region.

Book of the Month
Provocative, personal, and inspirational, The Green Collar Economy is not a dire warning but rather a substantive and viable plan for solving the biggest issues facing the country — the failing economy and our devastated environment. From a distance, it appears that these two problems are separate, but when we look closer, the connection becomes unmistakable.

Conservation Sensation

One of the best things about conservation is that there are things we can all do, through simple steps, that add up to big rewards.
Conservation is as simple as:
bullet
turning off the lights
bullet
choosing to use compact fluorescent light bulbs
bullet
using a low-flow showerhead
bullet
lowering your night-time heating temperature
And it’s as uncomplicated as signing up to participate in one of the PUD’s energy-saving conservation programs. click here to learn how

BUY NOTHING DAY

Friday Nov 28th

The Day after Thanksgiving

With the economy in the dumps why would we want to encourage a buy nothing day?

Roughly 5 million people in 65 nations took part last year in this group's Buy Nothing Day, which is the day after Thanksgiving -- the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. (He admits that probably half broke down and bought something, such as a cup of coffee. But still, they tried.)

A growing movement that urges simplicity in all things is attacking the "consumer madness" Christmas has become, says Kalle Lasn, editor-in-chief of Adbusters magazine, which advocates a low-consumption, ecologically friendly lifestyle.

Fully Contained Communities in our Rural Areas

Snohomish County Council voted 5-0 to adopt a six-month moratorium on accepting permit applications for Fully Contained Communities.

Great efforts will be made to ensure the FCC policies and codes either are amended to ensure current taxpayers are not footing the bill for a new city in Snohomish rural area.

FYI - Proponent of the FCC at Lake Roesiger will continue his campaign against Councilmember Dave Somers, and McNaughton Group will be advancing efforts to do some type of similar development in the Lake Goodwin area.

Both the Urban Residential Design Standards and Rural Cluster Subdivision Code update public hearings have been extended to January 7th.  Written comments are still being accepted so feel free to mail those in to the council.  The URDS hearing will be at 10:30 a.m. and the RCS hearings will be at 1:30 p.m.

Check www.futurewise.org/snohomish for most up to date times and locations for all meetings.
