From the President
General Meeting Thursday, Sept. 12
Everett PUD, 2320 California Ave, Everett, WA
at 7 p.m.

Program: Looking Sharp! A Visual Language for
Cyclists
David Smith (of the Seattle Bike Club) noticed
that motorists watch cyclists and try to figure out
what they will do next. When he stopped relying
on a mirror and looked directly, motorists gave
him far more cooperation. With this opportunity
he systematically stylized his cycling to be-
come transparent to other drivers and to do it with
such good style, motorists would want to cooper-
ate. This is a very powerful and efficient way
to show cyclists how to use the rules of the road
and operate as equals with motorists. Short video
clips will demonstrate simple traffic situations and
invite your discussion.
Business Meeting: Elections
The big business for this meeting is elections. We
will also review requests for funding of commu-
nity bicycle safety and advocacy projects. The

Nominations for additional candidates will be

Club Volunteer Breakfast Nov. 5
B.I.K.E.S. club volunteers keep this club rolling,
and to say thanks we honor them each year with a
special breakfast. Those invited have lead at least
three club rides in the past year (note that rides
organized by other clubs may count for miles, but
not for breakfast). We also thank stalwart volun-
teers who put extra hours in as club officers, get-
ting out the newsletter, managing our database and
organizing McClinchy Mile.
The breakfast will be at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5
at the Cabbage Patch Restaurant in Snohomish. A
bike ride will follow. Kristin will be giving all
invitees a phone call this month to confirm your
attendance. We're working on a special gift, too.
For the many club volunteers who put in a day
here or there, we thank you, too, but not on this
particular day. Consider upping your commitment
to the club for next year by leading a ride (we'll
help with your first) volunteering with the
McClinchy Committee or taking on a club officer
position.
