 McClinchy Mile Makes Good

Despite a cold morning that discouraged some riders, we had 278 people sign in at the 2006 McClinchy Mile.  There were 28 pre-registered no-shows including five who had purchased shirts. So, we had the equivalent of 306 registrants – down a couple hundred from the past two years, but very respectable and definitely profitable.

Our success is also measured in club involvement. We had 25+ volunteers helping out the day of the event, staffing four food stops, providing ride support, directing parking and taking money. Many of those volunteers and other club members rode a loop or two themselves – or three. Thanks to Eric Troili, we now know that riding all three loops add up to 108 miles.

We sold (or gave to volunteers) 100 Irish green McClinchy shirts.  Bill Weber also got such a deal on the shirts that he got volunteers sweatshirts for those who wanted – or fit - them. Final numbers on profits and expenses will be discussed at our April meeting. That will also be our time to review what worked and what we can improve for next year’s event.

I’d like to thank several key volunteers who put in many hours the past few months to make McClinchy work: Mike Dahlstrom, Seattle Bike Expo; Bill Higley, county permits; Debbie Kawamoto, insurance, money payer and taker; Bill Weber, t-shirts and mechanical support; Debby Grant, food; Patty Garrett, Arlington point person; Mike Snodgrass, maps; Ginny Conley, shopper; Tim Wise, flyers and website; Dan & Elaine Scott, routes and planning; Warren Bare, signs and planning; Jack McClincy, route marking,  Janet Orso, t-shirt design.

Lots of folks came out to help that day, including some new faces we really enjoyed seeing: Mary Andrew, Terry Snodgrass, Desiree Troili, John Carlin, John Lindstrom, Pete Pisani, Shirley Slade, Bill Nugent (who also helped construct our new signs), Gary Sauter, Jerry Maris (also helped with pre-planning), Richard Burrows, Rod McDonald, Albert Penta, Mason Rutledge.

B.I.K.E.S Recycles on Earth Day

The big spring project for Sharing Wheels is recycling bicycles for the annual Kids Bike Swap June 4. Kids bikes are easy to work on, but they do take time and TLC. Celebrate Earth Day by coming to the B.I.K.E.S. Club work party at Sharing Wheels from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All miles riding to the work party count as club miles! (you wouldn’t want to drive on Earth Day).

Ride Leaders Wanted

Kudos go to Bill Lutterloh, who started as a ride leader in 2005 and hasn’t stopped yet! You too can invite your B.I.K.E.S. Club friends to join you on your favorite ride. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure an experienced ride leader comes along on your first ride to offer support and advice. Contact Tim or Kristin for more information.

Update on 124th Street Overpass

Work is visible on the new bike-pedestrian overpass of I-5 north of 128th Street in Everett. The overpass has long been a planned improvement to the Interurban Trail, and is now a Dept. of Transportation project. Unfortunately, when the overpass is done this summer, it may be a trail to nowhere. The DOT has not been able to negotiate with a property owner on the east side of I-5 to allow a trail across his property which would connect with the next section of the Interurban.

However, that property owner now would like to develop his land, so Snohomish County is working to negotiate the trail as part of the development plan. Note that the state Attorney General’s Office has expressed the legal opinion that bike-ped trails are not eligible for “eminent domain” proceedings, meaning the property can’t be “condemned” for the public good unlike land needed for a road widening or public facility.
