From the President
Well the
weekend bicycle weather gods have smiled on our area a couple of
times since I last wrote. The McClinchy Mile ride is very near,
in fact ride registrations have already been returned. Bicycle
Expo is drawing near.
For those
who don't ride year round it is time to bring the bike off the
hooks and get ready to ride. Start by wiping the dust off.
Inflate the tires to the pressure marked on the side, look for
cuts and wear on the tread surface.
Check the
sides of the tires for cracks and cuts. check the brake pads
for wear and make sure they hit the rim surface and do not touch
any part of the rubber tire.
Rotate the
tires to see if the wheels are straight and that the brake pads
don't rub. Measure the chain (each link is 1/2inch) any more
than 1/16 inch of stretch (or wear) an in a 12 inch section will
cause rapid sprocket wear (replace as needed).
Clean and
lube the chain (be careful not to oil the brake surface on the
rim). Lightly oil the derailleurs and the cables where they go
through the housings. Check all fasteners that attach
components or accessories.
Check the
headset bearings by rotating the front wheel right and left (it
should have no lumpy movements), Then hold the front brake tight
and rock the bike forward and back (it should not feel loose).
Squeeze the
brake levers, they should not go to the handle bars. That was a
quick check of the stuff that helps you enjoy a ride without
failures. Now that your bike is ready to ride, how about joining
in on a club ride to a nearby coffee shop or bakery.
See you on a
ride soon!

Bike Path in Plan
BIKES Club members Kristin Kinnamon, Bob Nyberg and Steve
Linari stopped in at a meeting at the new Cavalero Mid-High
School to learn how Snohomish County planned to ease congestion
while increasing growth on Cavalero Hill/20th Street in south
Lake Stevens. The plan includes 5-foot bike lanes on 20th west
from Highway 9, and then, at the steepest part of the hill, a
12-foot south-side only bike lane that will go under the
eastbound Highway 2 off-ramp and connect with ... drum roll
please ... the bike lane under the trestle from Everett.
This could be a great facility for cyclists, if your heart can
stand climbing that hill. It was great to have BIKES Club
members show up (in lycra) to support the plan.
