Yakima Tour 2026 (16 May 2026)

Yakima Area Tour 2026

DATES HAVE CHANGED!!!

(By one day) See details below!

The canyon ride date and time are official and pre-registration is open.

The dates have been moved by one day to accommodate the May club meeting, which is the designated yearly meeting to elect club officers. The Saturday, Sunday, and Monday rides stay the same. The Friday ride has been moved from being the first ride to being the last ride, now scheduled for Tuesday.

I will be posting the individual rides in the next few days. You will need to register for each ride you would like to do. This allows people to sign up for some or all of the rides instead of the whole tour.

If the registration is full and you would like to do the ride, please put yourself on the waitlist. It'll get sorted out in the system and you'll be welcome on the ride.

Pace is steady, except for the Canyon Ride which is self paced. The rides on Saturday and Monday maybe slightly less scenic than last year's ride from Moxee to Zillah and back, but also a lot less hilly.

Saturday May 16th, Zillah, Toppenish, Wapato: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53336928

If you opt for a VRBO or Airbnb accommodation, please be sure to stay west of 16th street. That means a higher street number than 16th.

I'll be staying in Zillah.

Wapato - Donald - Zillah - Toppenish (16 May 2026)

Wapato - Donald - Zillah - Toppenish - Wapato

Yakima Tour Steady Ride

We'll take 38 mile loop through the agricultural area on the east and west sides of the Yakima River. Total elevation gain is around 1000'. Both Ride With GPS and my legs tell me the max grade is around 5% (no 12% like last year's traffic avoidance hill).

The route looks like this: 38 mile loop from Wapato

Meet at 9:45 at the Wapato Community Center for a 10:00 roll out. Last time I was there (a while ago), there were bathrooms at the community center. If there is an event at the community center, there is street parking or a lot a couple of blocks east at the Wapato Sports Park.

If you are already registered for the Yakima Region tour and want to do this ride, please register for this also!

As many of us found out last year, May weather can be unpredictable. It may be sunny. It may be rainy. It may be both. Please be sure to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

Zillah is about half way, so we have three options for lunch:

1. No lunch stop

2. El Ranchito (Where we had lunch last year. Great bike parking, slow, pricey, very good.)

3. Taqueria La Plazita (Not so good bike parking, less expensive, probably faster, on the Taco & Tamale trail map!)

If you have a preference, email me. I'm sure different people will prefer different options, so I'll see what input I get and make a decision so I can call ahead if necessary.

Ride Leader: Paul Heydron, + 1 425 344 1543, mailto:paulhh.wa@gmail.com

Disclaimers: E-bike welcome, please read and comply with the club e-bike policy. Bring snacks, enough to drink and the usual fix-it stuff, especially flat repair type fix-it stuff. I recommend the equivalent of two water bottles.

Yakima Canyon Ride (17 May 2026)

The Yakima Canyon

The Essentials

Where: S Canyon Road at the Roza Recreational Area

When: Sunday, May 17th, 2025 @ 9:45AM for a 10:00AM rollout

Pace: Steady (12 - 14 mph)

Route 1: The Official Route, 35.1 miles, 1,364' of elevation gain

Ride Leader: Paul Heydron, + 1 425 344 1543, mailto:paulhh.wa@gmail.com

If you are already registered for the Yakima Region tour and want to do this ride, please register for this also! You also need to register for the event!

The Description

This ride is an annual event that benefits Crime Stoppers of Yakima County. You need to do two things. First, register for the this ride here, with BIKES Club. Second, you need to register and pay for the ride here. Registration is open.

Now, about the ride ...

The ride starts at the south end at the Roza Recreation area and heads to the north end of the canyon at the Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center near Thrall Road. It's a pleasant 17.5 miles out, slightly up hill and usually against the wind, which of course makes the way back slightly downhill and usually with the wind.

Please read the description on the registration we site. They state there will be "light snacks and water along the route". There's not a lot in the canyon, so plan to bring enough to eat and drink and consider the light snacks and water as bonus. I would assume nothing except at the Thrall road turn around.

Nuts and Bolts

HAVE A FLASHING TAIL LIGHT! A headlight is good too.

The last time I was at Roza it was a pit toilet. I can't imagine it being closed when they hold the ride, but I can imagine it being pretty ... adventurous. Plan accordingly.

Remember to bring essential bike tools - especially flat repair equipment, sunscreen, and plenty to drink.

The mean daily high temperature is around 75F in mid-May. It can be substantially hotter or colder though. May is usually pretty dry, but not completely. Again, plan accordingly. The canyon can have it's own weather. Be prepared for wind.

Alternate Sunday Yakima Tour ride on the Mather Memorial scenic Highway in the Cascades (17 May 2026)

Upper Yakima Valley to American Fork or at least close to Chinook Pass Steady Pace up and Moderate Back

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54108879

Meet Natches Greenway Trailhead parking lot - restrooms available

Sunday, May 17th, 2025 @ 9:45AM for a 10:00AM rollout - maybe earlier.

As an alternate to the Canyon ride, we'll hopefully ride the closed to through traffic Mather Memorial Highway (410) to at least closed gate 5 miles from Chinook pass - maybe further. Regardless of how far we go, it will be a scenic treat. I put the entire route on a diet and feel it's more sensible to enjoy the lower half of the climb - stopping at American Fork (Mount Rainer viewpoint). Per the WSDOT website the highway is not going to open till May 24th to through traffic (there will be vehicles on road just many less). The route will depend on weather conditions the day of the ride -anything can happen in May. This is out and back with you guessed it - over gradual climb over approximately 70 miles round trip with less than 3000 a foot elevation gain. I rode a few miles of 410 on the last day (Monday) of the Yakima Tour last year and can attest the road is indeed signed closed to through traffic - other cyclists I met verified "it's amazing riding". Drinks at the end of ride in Natches.

https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/mbs/recreation/mather-memorial-parkway-sr-41

Ride leader - Lou Rivetti. 425-446-9019

Sunnyside Gravel Ride (18 May 2026)

Sunnyside Gravel Ride

Yakima Tour Steady Ride

We'll take 29 mile loop leaving from Sunnyside WA, head up (2-3%) for a while then cruise along the edge of a canal lateral for a while before heading back to Sunnyside. Total elevation gain is around 700'.

The route looks like this: Sunnyside Gravel Loop

Meet at 9:45 at Central Park in Sunnyside for a 10:00 roll out. Last time I was there (a while ago), there were bathrooms at the pool. Who knows if that's changed, so it might be a good idea to look for a stop along the way.

If you are already registered for the Yakima Region tour and want to do this ride, please register for this also!

As many of us found out last year, May weather can be unpredictable. It may be sunny. It may be rainy. It may be both. Please be sure to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

There is no planned lunch stop, but it's Sunnyside, so there will be tacos. Tacos El Pelon 2 and El Valle Family Mexican Restaurant get good reviews.

Ride Leader: Paul Heydron, + 1 425 344 1543, mailto:paulhh.wa@gmail.com

Disclaimer #1: E-bike welcome, please read and comply with the club e-bike policy. Bring snacks, enough to drink and the usual fix-it stuff, especially flat repair type fix-it stuff. I recommend the equivalent of two water bottles.

Disclaimer #2: I'll pre-ride this and make sure they haven't fenced off the route. If they have, I reserve the right to make a last minute route substitution. If so, it will be in the same general area.

Tieton or the Greenway (19 May 2026)

Tieton and the Yakima Greenway

So this is where the weather went wrong last year ... Instead of a new route, we'll try this again and hope for better weather. Like last year there will be a choice of two rides.

If you are already registered for the Yakima Region tour and want to do this ride, please resister for this also!

The Essentials - Plan A

Where: Gilbert Park off of Lincoln Avenue, Yakima, WA

When: Saturday, May 17th, 2025 @ 10:30AM for a 10:45AM rollout

Pace: Steady (12 - 14 mph)

Route: Not Much in Tieton, 35.8 miles, 1,582' of elevation gain.

Ride Leader: Paul Heydron, + 1 425 344 1543, mailto:paulhh.wa@gmail.com

The Essentials - Plan B

Where: Chesterley Park of River Road, Yakima, WA

When: Saturday, May 17th, 2025 @ 10:30AM for a 10:45AM rollout

Pace: Steady (12 - 14 mph)

Route: Mostly like A Kinder, Gentler Trip to Naches, 32 miles, 819' of elevation gain

Ride Leader: Dan Scott, + 1 425 501 6198

Disclaimer #1: Dan may choose a different route and start location. If you choose this ride, be sure to check for updates!

Why two plans?

Firstly, some people may not want the hills between miles 4.5 and 8.5 on the ride to Tieton. I like the ride to Tieton, but it's challenging. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, plan B is a backup for everyone in case of epic wind (and in last year's case, epic lightening.) The choice of which ride is yours.

Plan A Description

The plan is for a steady pace ride from the west side of Yakima out through Cowiche to Tieton and then returning along the Naches River via the Yakima Greenway Trail. We'll stop in Tieton for lunch, thus the later start. There's not a lot in Tieton, but the Nomad Kitchen, Panaderia Santos, and Don Mateo have good reputations. Of course you can bring your own lunch and there is also a convenience store. Lunch may be in Tieton City Park. The ride out along Summitview Road isn't the most peaceful. It's a busy road but has a wide shoulder. The route may be altered to take a few of the back roads, but expect a similar distance and elevation gain. We'll take the urban trail on the way back and return to the start through Yakima.

Plan B Description

The plan is for a steady pace ride from northwest Yakima to Naches and back using surface streets and the urban trail. The plan is for a coffee/lunch break in Naches ... and seeing an elk or goat if you're really, really lucky.

Nuts and Bolts

HAVE A FLASHING TAIL LIGHT! A headlight is good too.

No restroom at the start.

Remember to bring the usual stuff - snacks, a lunch if you want to pack it, essential bike tools - especially flat repair equipment, sunscreen, and plenty to drink.

The mean daily high temperature is around 75F in mid-May. It can be substantially hotter or colder though. May is usually pretty dry, but not completely. Plan accordingly.
