After 20 + years of riding with Shimano SPD cleats, I never knew there are different varieties. The original, more secure SH51, and the easier to release SH56 for more casual riding.  Now there is an even newer easier-entry version of the original. All explained by this YouTuber:

As a sales guy in an LBS, you ALWAYS need something different, no matter what you have.
So, to answer your original question, YES!

In a little more serious tone, the brand new model cleats from Shimano address two issues which I think are important. 1) Because they are thinner, you will have less clacking when you’re walking around at the coffee shop, and less scratching up your wood floors at home, 2) Easier entry when you’re in a difficult starting situation like on a steep gravel trail.

IMHO, it’s not worth upgrading your cleats unless you have the two situations noted above or you just like to have the latest and greatest.

Cleats do eventually wear out, so if you’re going to change out your cleats, you might as well get the latest version, which are not yet in the stores by the way.
