  Meet at 9:45 AM for a 10 AM rollout.  Moderate (14 – 16 mph) to brisk (16 - 18 mph) pace expected.  36 miles.  1,432 feet of gain, A/B terrain.  

  Loop ride on roads, streets and trails to Snohomish then along the Snohomish River back to Everett.  Rest stops expected.  Cross & descend on the Grand Avenue Park Bridge.  Coffee & lunch stop at the South Fork Baking Company at the Everett Marina (mile 24).

  Yakima Tour Steady Ride

  We'll take 38 mile loop through the agricultural area on the east and west sides of the Yakima River.  Total elevation gain is around 1000'.  Both Ride With GPS and my legs tell me the max grade is around 5% (no 12% like last year's traffic avoidance hill).

  The route looks like this: 38 mile loop from Wapato

  Meet at 9:45 at the Wapato Community Center for a 10:00 roll out.  Last time I was there (a while ago), there were bathrooms at the community center.  If there is an event at the community center, there is street parking or a lot a couple of blocks east at the Wapato Sports Park.

  If you are already registered for the Yakima Region tour and want to do this ride, please register for this also!
  

  As many of us found out last year, May weather can be unpredictable.  It may be sunny.  It may be rainy.  It may be both.  Please be sure to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

  Zillah is about half way, so we have three options for lunch:

  1. No lunch stop

  2. El Ranchito (Where we had lunch last year.  Great bike parking, slow, pricey, very good.) 

  3. Taqueria La Plazita (Not so good bike parking, less expensive, probably faster, on the Taco & Tamale trail map!)

  The canyon ride date and time are official and pre-registration is open.

  The dates have been moved by one day to accommodate the May club meeting, which is the designated yearly meeting to elect club officers.  The Saturday, Sunday, and Monday rides stay the same.  The Friday ride has been moved from being the first ride to being the last ride, now scheduled for Tuesday.

  I will be posting the individual rides in the next few days.  You will need to register for each ride you would like to do.  This allows people to sign up for some or all of the rides instead of the whole tour.

  If the registration is full and you would like to do the ride, please put yourself on the waitlist.  It'll get sorted out in the system and you'll be welcome on the ride.

  Pace is steady, except for the Canyon Ride which is self paced.  The rides on Saturday and Monday maybe slightly less scenic than last year's ride from Moxee to Zillah and back, but also a lot less hilly.

  The Description

  This ride is an annual event that benefits Crime Stoppers of Yakima County.  You need to do two things.  First, register for the this ride here, with BIKES Club.  Second, you need to register and pay for the ride here.  Registration is open. 

  Now, about the ride ...

  The ride starts at the south end at the Roza Recreation area and heads to the north end of the canyon at the Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center near Thrall Road.  It's a pleasant 17.5 miles out, slightly up hill and usually against the wind, which of course makes the way back slightly downhill and usually with the wind.

  Please read the description on the registration we site.  They state there will be "light snacks and water along the route".  There's not a lot in the canyon, so plan to bring enough to eat and drink and consider the light snacks and water as bonus.  I would assume nothing except at the Thrall road turn around.

  Nuts and Bolts

  HAVE A FLASHING TAIL LIGHT!  A headlight is good too.

  The last time I was at Roza it was a pit toilet.  I can't imagine it being closed when they hold the ride, but I can imagine it being pretty ... adventurous.  Plan accordingly.

  Remember to bring essential bike tools - especially flat repair equipment, sunscreen, and plenty to drink.

  The mean daily high temperature is around 75F in mid-May.  It can be substantially hotter or colder though.  May is usually pretty dry, but not completely.  Again, plan accordingly.  The canyon can have it's own weather.  Be prepared for wind.

  Here is an opportunity for a bicycle tour of the San Juan Islands.  Two (2) pace groups to choose from, hotel stays, restaurant meals, and the option for gear delivery by car.  This steady ride will be co-ordinated and co-located with the mod ride.

  Meeting Time & Location:

  • 12:00 noon, Sunday June 7th in Anacortes at a parking lot in the SE corner of Q Ave & 9th St
  • This meeting is for the pre-ride briefing and to transfer any of your gear you want to put into the SAG car, then we will proceed to the Anacortes ferry area.
  • Cars cannot be left at this location for the duration of the tour.
  • The Anacortes ferry area is expected to be too busy and crowded to find a meeting place.
  • We expect to return on Friday, June 12th on the 11;30 AM ferry arrival in Anacortes.

  Register:

  • If this steady tour looks like your kind of fun, register as soon as possible and make your lodging reservations as soon as possible.
  • Group size for each of the mod group and steady group limited to 6 each (12 total) or lodging availability, whichever is less.

  • Day 1 Sunday, June 7th:
  • • Travel from home to the meeting location described above.  Those will do the whole trip by bike will move baggage to the car(s) going on the ferry.  
    • Bike riders who need to park their cars should drive to the Anacortes ferry area to find one of several pay lots to park their car, then ride their bike a 1/2 mile or so to the Anacortes ferry terminal to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island. 
    • Bike riders also will ride 4 miles from the meeting area to the Anacortes ferry terminal to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island.  
    • No reservation required for bike riders.  ORCA card suggested.
    • Car drivers will drive to the Anacortes toll booth to pay ferry fare to Lopez Island.  Car reservations strongly suggested.  ORCA card suggested.
    • We’ll take the 1:55 PM ferry to Lopez Island then ride to Lopez Village for 3 nights.  A few lodging options are available.  The Lopez Islander Resort is suggested with king and double queen rooms on the ground floor and has a restaurant for dinner.  Breakfast and market options are an easy mile to Lopez Village.

  • Day 2 Monday, June 8th:  
  • • Ride either moderate or steady routes around Lopez Island.  
    • The mod route is 35 miles with 2,106 feet of gain.  
    • The steady route will be shorter and easier.

  • Day 3 Tuesday, June 9th:
  • • The mod group ride will load onto a car(s), take the 11 AM ferry to Orcas Island, drive to Eastsound, and ride to Mt Constitution and Olga.  28 miles and 3,608 feet of gain.  We might even hike up the tower on the top of Mt Constitution for a spectacular 360-degree view.  Return to Lopez Island via the 4:05 PM ferry.  
    • The steady group will do a different route on Lopez Island.

  • Day 4 Wednesday, June 10th:
  • • Travel via bike / car / ferry to Friday Harbor for 2 nights.  
    • There are numerous lodging options around Friday Harbor.  
    • The Friday Harbor Suites is suggested and is known to have a variety of rooms on the ground floor and an elevator for 2^nd floor rooms.  
    • Restaurants are about ½ mile in town.

  • Day 5 Thursday, June 11th:  
  • • The mod ride is a 45-mile loop, 3,114 feet of gain, around San Juan Island with lots of stops including Roche Harbor, English Camp, American Camp, and Cattle Point.  
    • A couple of options could shorten and ease the mod ride.
    • The steady ride will be a shorter & easier ride about the island.

  • Day 6 Friday, June 12th:  
  • • Travel via bike / car / ferry back to Anacortes and on to home.

  Reservations:  The San Juan Islands are very popular, and everything will be booked soon.  Hotels and ferries for cars will require reservations.  No reservations required for bike travelers.

  Mill Creek - Stampede Pass Tour 2026

  No one is known to live at Stampede Pass, but we do hear about it from the weather people on TV.  What's it like there?  Here is an opportunity to ride your bike there with friends and see for yourself.

  This is a 5-day / 4-night unsupported bikepack tour from Mill Creek to Stampede Pass with overnight motel stays in North Bend each way and two nights at Snoqualmie Pass.  No camping gear required, but you will need to carry your gear and clothing on your bike.  Meals will be at locally available food establishments.  Picnic lunches for days 2, 3, and 4.

  Equipment:  

  • Gravel capable bikes are required.  The gravel surfaces expected are mostly hard-packed gravel with some loose gravel places possible.
  • Your bike must be in good condition and ready for the route. 
  • You must be able to do your own minor repairs, including flat tire repairs, and maintenance.
  • Daytime only riding expected.  White front and red tail-lights are recommended to improve our visibility to motor vehicle drivers.  
  • A really good white front light is required in tunnels to help you see your way around potholes, debris, and sleeping bears.
  • You might need to clean your bike for lodging access.

  You must make your own lodging reservations and acquire your own food & water enroute.

  Meeting Time & Location: 

  • 8:30 AM Monday, July 13th at the Mill Creek Sports Park for a 9:00 AM roll out.
  • Cars cannot be parked at the Sports Park for the duration of this tour.  We can arrange to meet up along the route.
  • We expect to return Friday, July 17th, by 5 PM.

  Routes: The total 5-day 191 mile route is something like 43% paved (81 miles) and 57% gravel (109 miles):

    • 24 miles paved, 20 miles gravel.
    • Mostly paved roads from Mill Creek to Duvall, then mostly gravel Snoqualmie Valley Trail to North Bend with a paved side trip to see Snoqualmie Falls and ride through Snoqualmie.

    • Mostly Snoqualmie Valley & Palouse to Cascades Trails from North Bend to Hyak, then paved roads to Snoqualmie Pass.

    • Paved roads from Snoqualmie Pass to Hyak, then gravel Palouse to Cascades Trail and forest service roads to Stampede Pass.  Reverse on return.

    • Snoqualmie Valley Trail from North Bend to Fall City, 4 miles of paved roads to connect with Preston – Snoqualmie Trail, Issaquah – Preston Trail, East Lake Sammamish Trail, Sammamish River Trail, North Creek Trail, and paved roads to Mill Creek.
    • Coffee/lunch at Starbucks in Redmond mile 33.

  Pace: 

  • The moderate “effort” pace of this bikepack tour is intended for riders who regularly ride paved roads at a moderate to brisk pace slowed down by a touring load of gear, riding on gravel, with photo & rest stops, etc.
